Physicians prescribe hydroxychloroquine to treat systemic lupus erythematosus SLE, and it has been shown to have anti-thrombotic effects in SLE patients. Although obvious reasons exist to believe hydroxychloroquine may be useful to treat APS, its use in APS patients remains controversial. In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus SLE, hydroxychloroquine prevents disease flares and damage accrual and facilitates the response to mycophenolate mofetil in those with renal involvement. A study was undertaken to determine whether hydroxychloroquine also exerts a protective effect on survival. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is the most commonly prescribed because it is generally believed to cause fewer side effects; chloroquine Aralen has a reputation for more serious side effects, but it may be prescribed in situations where hydroxychloroquine cannot be used.

LAWCHICK - chest pain/plaquenil I have definitely had the chest pains beginning Jan 2015. Thought it was pericarditis or pleuritis, then I got a cough in Feb which didn't go away until October that caused the chest pain to be EXCRUTIATING when I coughed. I really have never gotten off of Plaquenil and last year I found that I have cataracts in both eyes.
