    Plaquenil for mild rheumatoid arthritis

There’s no cure for arthritis, which is unfortunate, but feeling better is definitely possible. The progression of RA may be diminished in severity and duration by the combination of medicines and therapy that work best as determined by you and your physician.

Rheumatoid arthritis drugs fight pain and prevent joint damage. See a full list of RA medications, including NSAIDs, DMARDs, immunosuppressants, and others. According to the American College of Rheumatology, hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, is a “disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD,” meaning that it helps reduce the pain and swelling that come with arthritis. It can also reduce the incidence of joint damage, thus lessening the risk of developing a long-term disability from complications of RA. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil and sulfasalazine Azulfidine are used for mild rheumatoid arthritis. They are not as powerful as other DMARDs, but they usually cause fewer side effects. In rare cases, Plaquenil can adversely affect the eyes, and people taking this medicine should be seen by an ophthalmologist at least once a year.

Being able to stop joint damage can lessen pain and mean a better quality of life. You can also put off joint damage, and in some cases, you can do more than just slow it down.

Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria. Generally, Plaquenil is a treatment option as monotherapy used alone for mild rheumatoid arthritis or as combination therapy with other DMARDs for moderate to severe disease. I have not had problematic side effects from the Plaquenil or MTX, but the steroids caused weight gain and some hair loss besides what was caused by the arthritis. I am still negative for the RA factor, but have suffered with bilateral trochanteric bursitis and pain at the sides of my knees. Plaquenil is prescribed for the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis inflammation of joints with stiffness, swelling and pain and childhood arthritis. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus SLE, a disease where the immune system of the body mistakenly attack healthy tissues affecting skin, joints, brain, kidneys and other organs.
