    Viagra warning

The manufacturers to Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have taken an FDA-mandated warning and turned it into a marketing coup. After all, in addition to flowers and chocolates, what better present can you give your Valentine than a night of pleasure from your 4-plus hour erection? Unfortunately, should you experience this prolonged penile engorgement, a condition called priapism, it may be the last erection that you ever have. Erections occur when the muscle cells that surround the small arterial blood vessels in the penis relax, allowing blood to flow into the penis, which then enlarges and closes off the veins that drain the blood from the penis that keeps it erect. Ejaculation results in less blood flowing to the penis, releasing the pressure on the veins and thereby allowing the blood to flow out. Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil) are members of a drug class called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These drugs prolong the relaxation of the muscles around the penile blood vessels, keeping the blood in the penis. A ‘herbal Viagra’ sold in many traditional Chinese medicine stores contains ‘dangerously high’ levels of prescription-only anti-obesity and erectile dysfunction drugs, the UK's medicine watchdog has warned. Despite claiming to contain only herbal ingredients, the product actually contains up to four times the levels of the pharmaceuticals found in legal prescription drugs. The unlicensed product 'Jia Yi Jian', has been analysed by the MHRA and found to contain the undeclared ingredients Sibutramine, used to treat obesity, and Tadalafil, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. These drugs are licensed as prescription-only drugs in the UK. Potential side effects include significant heart and blood pressure problems and potential harmful interactions with other blood pressure and heart disease medications and some antidepressants. The MHRA warns that this product presents ‘a clear risk’ to consumers and that anyone taking it should stop immediately and consult their GP. Jia Yi Jian is manufactured by Hunan Aimin Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Sildenafil is used to treat male sexual function problems (impotence or erectile dysfunction-ED). In combination with sexual stimulation, sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis to help a man get and keep an erection. This drug does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (such as HIV, hepatitis B, gonorrhea, syphilis). Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking sildenafil and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. To treat erectile dysfunction-ED, take this drug by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually as needed. Take sildenafil at least 30 minutes, but no more than 4 hours, before sexual activity (1 hour before is the most effective). A high-fat meal may delay how quickly the drug begins to work. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nation’s drug-safety watchdog, approved the three main erection drugs as “safe.” But are they? According to a recent study of erection medication side effects during the decade from 1998 (the year Viagra was approved) through 2007, Viagra has been implicated in at least 1,824 deaths mostly from heart attacks. Before the FDA approves new drugs, the agency requires manufacturers to submit safety studies that identify side effects. Cialis (approved in 2003) has been linked to 236 deaths, and Levitra (2003) to 121. For erection medications, the studies were reassuring—nothing worse than low rates of minor annoyances:• Headache: 10-15% (depending on the drug and dose)• Stomach upset: 4-10%• Flushing: 2-11%• Back pain: 2-6%• Nasal congestion: 2-4%• Blurred vision: 2-3%• Flu-like symptoms: 2-3%But the dirty little secret of safety studies presented to the FDA is that subject pools number just a few thousand. In addition, the three medications appear to have caused or significantly contributed to at least 2,500 nonfatal heart attacks and other potentially serious heart problems, and more than 25,000 other potentially serious side effects, among them: mini-strokes, vision loss, and hearing loss. If a drug kills, say, one person in 150,000, that side effect is unlikely to show up during pre-approval trials. But if the drug becomes a hit and millions use it, you’re looking at dozens of funerals. After approval, with increased use, new side effects turn up regularly. As a result, within five years of drug approvals, the FDA insists that manufacturers expand the side effects and warnings sections of their package inserts for half of new drugs. Erection medications’ official list of side effects has been updated several times as new side effects have turned up.

Huber started with bio-identical hormone treatment using progesterone in women and was influenced by many teachers, including Dr. Lee, who was a big proponent of the use of micronized progesteroneregarding the use of radio-labeled topical progesterone being given to women two weeks before removal of their breast biopsy and the fact that large quantities of radio-labeled progesterone were found in the breast tissue removed, but there was little rise in serum levels, suggesting the progesterone was absorbed but that serum levels weren’t reflective of topical application. Huber sites the specific work of David Zava, Ph D, owner of ZRT Laboratories, who is an expert on hormone testing for topically applied hormones (In men the use of supra-physiologic doses of topical testosterone cream is many times administered at 50, 100 or 150 mg per day (the male only produces 5-12 mg of testosterone per day). These doses will create a “tachyphylaxis” or attenuation of the hormone’s ability to activate the hormone receptor sight due to supra-physiologic doses of topical testosterone in the attempt to raise serum levels. More and more testosterone is used with less and less benefit while serum levels rise slowly and moderately (sometimes not at all) over time. Huber has found that by using physiologic doses of testosterone in the 5-10 mg range, endogenous testosterone production is not suppressed as much or at all, and there is a better long-term clinical effect from the testosterone and can be followed nicely using saliva testing. The goal is to enhance the body’s own ability to increase or maintain physiologic testosterone levels, not suppress them or replace them if possible with supra-physiologic doses. Huber uses these physiologic doses of topical testosterone between 5-12 mg per day he doesn’t see the side effects of rising PSA (prostate specific antigen) and DHT (dehydrotestosterone) levels, aromatization (conversion to estrogen) or increased red blood cell production (sometime wrongly called polycythemia). In younger men between the ages of 20-40 it is even more important if testosterone is used to use lower non-supressing, but supportive doses of testosterone at 2.5-5 mg per day of topical testosterone. He follows his testosterone patients on topical creams with saliva testing which immediately and accurately shows absorption of adequate amounts of testosterone. When asking two large drug companies who manufacture prescription topical testosterone products where their absorption studies are that show the “10% absorption” rule from their topically applied products there was no absorption studies available from these companies. By Bruce Horovitz While popping my daily dose of pills the other day—you know, the drugs guys over 60 often take to try to squeeze out another decade or two—I stumbled across a news story describing the drugs President Donald Trump takes, according to his personal physician. The 45th president and I are aging like blood brothers. We’re both using baby aspirin to stave off heart attacks, a statin to lower our cholesterol and doxycycline to control a similar skin-reddening condition called rosacea. But there’s one drug in Trump’s reported regimen that I would never touch—a medication to prevent premature baldness called Propecia. Never mind that my hair is thinning faster than the South American rain forest. Here’s why: Propecia, a simple daily capsule, may help the president preserve his famous hairline. Bornstein, told The New York Times recently that he, too, takes Propecia, which may foster the flowing locks the doctor sports at age 69. But keeping one’s hair through the miracles of modern medicine comes with risk. Propecia, the brand name for drug giant Merck’s finasteride, has become a magnet for personal injury lawyers with, by one count, 1,370 lawsuits filed by plaintiffs. There’s no indication that Trump—who’s famous for enjoying a spirited lawsuit now and then—has made any legal filings against Propecia.
