    Itching after taking chloroquine

My skin turns red, and it feels like something is biting me. It's bad around my ankles and the tops of my feet, my arms, and I get red blotches and spots on my chest.

I have had to stop my plaquenil and aside from the fatigue and joint pain that I knew I would have, I also now have a sunburned look on my face when I go out in the sun and itching skin, almost like a hive type rash on my back. Has anyone else ever had this after stopping the plaquenil. Effects of chloroquine? Chloroquine is a relatively well-tolerated. medicine. The most common adverse reactions reported are stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and headache. These side effects can often be lessened by taking chloroquine with food. Chloroquine may also cause itching in some people. All medicines may have some side effects. The risk may also be higher with some doses of chloroquine, if you use chloroquine for longer than 5 years, or if you take certain other drugs like tamoxifen. Call your doctor right away if you have any eyesight changes like blurred or foggy eyesight, trouble focusing or reading, or trouble seeing in dim light.

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this and what they did to help it! I was reading online and some people had mentioned that the name brand Plaquenil didn't cause such a severe reaction.

Several studies have suggested that there could be heredo-familial factors influencing chloroquine induced pruritus2,9,10. Study has shown that, 133 40.20% of 331 patients experienced itching to chloroquine and all those prone to itching to chloroquine did so after oral administration of the drug. Most of the patients described were African or of African descent with dark skin who had been exposed to the sun. One was a Hispanic patient who developed vitiligo-like skin depigmentation after 1 month of chloroquine therapy for cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The skin rapidly repigmented after discontinuation of chloroquine therapy. Avoid taking an antacid or Kaopectate kaolin-pectin within 4 hours before or after you take chloroquine. Some antacids can make it harder for your body to absorb chloroquine. If you also take an antibiotic called ampicillin, avoid taking it within 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take chloroquine.
