    Mom has Lupus like me, but she was diagnosed when she was 40 yrs old and now she is 58. She has and enlarged heart, diabetes, had a stroke, and failing kidneys.

    Re Plaquenil - Better Than Prednisone? Have been taking Plaquenil for over a year now and it has definitely made a huge difference in my quality of life. When I first went to my Rhuemy and found out what was wrong, I was so sick I could barely function with fatigue, joint and muscle aches just to name a few. My boyfriend was diagnosed with lupus about a year ago. Initially he was prescribed 50 mg of prednisone cause his body was aching so bad. He’s trying to taper off of it, but something will start aching really bad. He was on plaquenil, but he started having breathing problems. Yes, anti-malarials can be taken with other lupus medications, including corticosteroids e.g. prednisone, immunosuppressives, cytotoxic drugs, and NSAIDs. Anti-malarial drugs may be given in combination with prednisone to reduce the amount of steroid needed to control lupus symptoms and thus to alleviate some of the side effects of the steroid.

    Plaquenil is an anti-malarial that slows the progression of the disease. This is a very popular and normal combination, I'd say that at least 75% of the lupus forum members have been on it!

    I dropped my dose from 2 down to 1 for the past 3 (going on 4) days, and I am already miserable. How long before your hair started coming back and you began feeling better?
