If you take Plaquenil for your inflammatory disease, your ophthalmologist will check for damage to the retina in the back of the eye while you take the drug. Be sure to notify your ophthalmologist that you are taking this medicine so you can have the correct visual screening tests. Every person starting Plaquenil should have a baseline ophthalmologic exam within the first year, see the section below on How to use Plaquenil for things to ask for during your visit and regular screenings thereafter. If your ophthalmologist does find some Plaquenil deposits, s/he will simply request that you stop taking the medication, and you may follow up with your rheumatologist about another advised method of treatment. Unfortunately, retinal damage caused by Aralen may be irreversible, but this medication is rarely prescribed anymore for lupus.
